The Flavian Amphitheater, better known as the Colosseum, is the biggest monument of Ancient Rome. Its construction was started by Caesar Vespacianus in year 72, and finished by Titus in year 80. Domitianus had it decorated in Athenian style. The best-conserved part is the one facing the Esquiline. Numerous Roman buildings were constructed with the stones originating from the Colosseum, during a long process of demolition… Besides, an earthquake occurred in 1349 damaged the part facing the Caelius Hill. In the 18th century, Benedict XIV put finally an end to the centuries-long vandalism – he declared that the monument was sacred, the place which, people said (although it has been so often contested until today), had been bathed with the blood of Christian martyrs. The name, Colosseum, comes from a great monumental statue (Colosseo) of Nero, today already disappeared, who once stood between the amphiteater and the arch of Constantinus. The Colosseum is dominated by the Palatino Hill, geographically the development center of the Seven Hills of Rome.
