About this photo...
At the western side of the Forum, starting from the Arch of Septimius Severus, the foundation and some pillars still remain from the ancient glory of Basilica Julia, near the Temple of Saturn. In 54 B.C., Caesar ordered its construction, naming it after his own family. Yet it had been his nephew, Augustus, who would have seen the finished artwork, shortly before it was entirely destroyed by fire. The Basilica was an impressive-sized building, 101 m on 49 m with five naves and a large central hall surrounded by two porticos on each side. This photo has been viewed 37759 times
