Political and religious center of the Roman Empire, today the place remains an exceptional place, for the ambience you’d feel there and for the magnificent artworks the Capitoline still houses. “Capitoline” comes from a latin word “caput”, meaning “head”. It is often said that Tarquinius, Rome’s fifth king, found a human head when his people were digging the foundation of this Jupiter’s temple, and legend has it associated with this story. It is more likely that the word “Capitolium” was derived from the fact that it had been, indeed, the head of the powerful Empire.
