Roma Gallery invites you to the group exhibition “Diaspora – Greek Artists in Paris“. The exhibition highlights the artistic contribution of Greek artists who lived and worked in the French capital in the post-war period and during 1967-1974, revealing their participation in international artistic developments and their interaction with the artistic movements of the time. After the end of World War II, some of them emigrated, having received a scholarship from the French government – while our country was in the throes of civil strife. Others travelled with a pressing need to contact their fellow citizens in a European city that was welcoming and promised work and freedom of expression. However, most decided to leave their birthplace because of ideological and political beliefs. Some were literally forced to emigrate! Most of them settled in the Latin Quarter or Montparnasse, and came into contact and interacted with very important personalities of the time, such as Pierre Restany, Christian Zervos, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, Costas Axelos, Cornelius Castoriadis, Alexandre Iolas, Nikolaos Kalas, Michael Rapti’s (Pablo), Andreas Embiricos and others. The work of the artists of the Parisian diaspora becomes known in Greece mainly through exhibitions, while it is communicated through publications in the press and art magazines. After the fall of the April dictatorship, the artists’ contacts with their homeland were significantly strengthened and gradually restored. Towards the end of the 1970s most of them returned to Greece. But they did not stop visiting the French capital frequently, actively participating in the artistic events there. Many Greek artists have passed through Paris and created. In this exhibition they participate:
