The works of Giorgos Tsakiris currently on display at Roma Gallery belong to a new series that was created from 2016 onwards, and reintroduce the artist’s interests throughout his practice. The velentzes, a type of handwoven woolen textile crafted on traditional looms, typically from sheep’s wool, and used as bedding, are transformed into artistic expression through a series of small gestures. Their origin is important: they were gifted by women living at the foot of Mt. Paiko, handcrafted by everyone’s great-grandmothers. By entrusting them to him, they entrusted him with their old treasures and their old affluence. These objects – once part of dowry contracts, though of no use these days – retain the memory of the wealth they once represented; a memory Tsakiris rekindles with dignity. Yukos is not just an object: it’s a tradition with a long history, related to the display of dowry items before a wedding Tsakiris clearly retains the memory. In a way, he rekindles and preserves it. However, the interest (also) lies elsewhere: by focusing on these objects, he confirms the turnarounds in the study of material culture, which has long since been opposed the Western custom of classifying people as subjects, living and active, and objects (the material world) as inactive and passive. Tsakiris’ work, focusing on the velentza and the yukos (and anything else he occasionally gets his hands on), bridges traditional dichotomies, constantly shedding light on the dialectical relationship between subjects and objects. In doing so, he contributes to a broader theoretical inquiry into our relationship with matter, the boundaries between subjects and objects, and the meaning surrounding objects, which change when they circulate among different social, cultural and temporal value systems. His practice continuously recalls the community members who gather in the home (in the strict or broad sense).

GIORGOS TSAKIRIS WAS BORN IN GIANNITSA IN 1955. He studied Electronics and later on during his studies in the school of Fine Arts in Florence. Ηe was taught how to paint by professor Faruli and engraving with professor Vizzano. Upon his return to Greece (1983) he was living between Athens and Thessaloniki, holding a workshop on the base of Paikos mountain. He was a professor at the School of Fine Arts of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). Tsakiris has presented his work in more than 40 solo exhibitions, he has participated in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, and his works are part of public and private collections all around the world. His work was presented in Greece, France, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Spain, Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Skopje, Czech Republic, Finland, Moldova, Ukraine, Switzerland. Amongst others, he took part in the European Polidaedalus (1993) in Chania, in XIX Biennale in Alexandria (1997), in Athens by Art (2004) and in exhibitions that took place in European Capitals of Culture (Weimar, Prague, Helsinki and others). Τhe artist has received many awards, as he received the Special Painting Award Santa Croce in Florence in 1987 and 1982, as well as the First Award in Engraving in Vilamania in 1981. In 2017 the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) honored him with the Prize of Excellence 2017 for his international artistic presence. His painting and engraving works until 1980 are influenced heavily by Francis Bacon, while numbers and mathematical signs, elements of Greek and Latin scripture, form-ing words and sentences, are embodied in his compositions. Gradually, all surfaces lose their rectangular or square shape. The wall installations are combined with real objects (like tree trunks, ropes and other) forming structural units. The years around 1980, signify Tsakiris’s final transition to three-dimensional structures. Most of them have a totemic shape, and their placement creates a feeling of being part of ritual. The same rationale was followed by a series of his works, which were presented during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. His set up in mountain Paikos (1986) was very critical in the artist’s development. Since then, a series of outdoor space manipulation emerged, a series that is in complete harmony with the environment, without disrupting its morphology and function. What the artist proposed through this series of interventions was the existence of a special relationship between art and nature, as well as a way for the audience to view this work as a living entity rather than a lifeless spectacle. Time altered these structures and compositions, the same way it does to every living being. In the ’90s, living organisms were presented in front of an audience, in artificial ecosystems, created by Tsakiris in his exhibitions. This time, art doesn’t take place outdoors, but instead all the natural functions are installed in the exhibition hall.
